I have been pretty much obsessed with Planet of the Apes since I first saw the original film (we watched it in a year 7 english class for a reason I can’t remember, but it must of been something educational). I’m not sure what it was that struck a chord that first time, but whatever it was, I couldn’t get enough. I went out that weekend and rented all four sequels, I went Ape! The fact that no one else I knew liked the movies, or even wanted to watch them meant I was all alone in my fandom. I think that is why Zira, Cornelius, Caesar and the rest of the gang hold such a special place in my heart. After the disappointing 2001 TIm Burton remake, I took the news of Rise of the Planet of the Apes with trepidation and promised myself not to have high expectations. I finally got the chance to see it today and I’m relieved to report that I loved it! (I’m sure everyone was on edge waiting for my verdict). I spent the first hour on the verge of tears over the plight of Caesar. There were moments of giddiness at the sprinkling of ‘Original Apes’ references (“It’s a madhouse… a madhouse!”). A few breathless moments (‘NO!’) and then the rest of it calculating in my head the next two sequels that I already can’t wait to see! I’m so glad to have my apes back!
